Boko Haram: IG dispatches 2,000 policemen to North-East

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris has deployed additional 2,000 personnel of the Police Mobile Force, Counter-Terrorism unit and the Sniffer Dog Section in the North-East to complement the military in the counter-insurgency operations against Boko Haram.
The police stated that the deployment was in accordance with Section 4 of the Police Act and Regulations.
The Police spokesman, Moshood Jimoh, in a statement in Abuja on Sunday, said the force had 47 PMF units in Borno State totalling 2,961, aside the latest deployment.
In Yobe State, it added, the force has 1,638 riot policemen while there were 1,134 men in Adamawa State.
The statement read, “Counter-Terrorism unit of the Force has deployed 1,250 specially trained CTU personnel; The Police Anti-Bomb Squad has about 300 personnel while over 100 sniffer dogs are working with the Military in the fight against insurgency in the North-East.”
The police disclosed that their personnel had been involved in the counter-terrorism operations with the Military, adding that the men had been providing security in liberated communities and protecting Internally Displaced Persons camps and local and foreign aid workers.
Meanwhile, the Police Service Commission has promoted 239 senior Police Officers, including two Commissioners of Police who were elevated to the rank of Assistant Inspectors-General of Police.
CPs Peter Ogunyawo and Mohammed Hussein were promoted AIGs while Eusuong James; Ogundele Ayodeji; Abdullahi Shehu; Ajala Ayoola; Ohikere Idris; Alfa Jibrin; Romoke Ibiani; Francis Bissong; Akika Augustine and Peter Wagbara, were promoted Deputy Commissioners.
The commission spokesman, Ikechukwu Ani, in a statement on Sunday, explained that 12 Superintendents of Police are now Chief Superintendents while 76 Deputy Superintendents of Police and 139 ASPs were elevated to Superintendents and Deputy Superintendents respectively.
The Commission also ratified the promotion of 7,981 Inspectors to the next rank of ASPs.
“The promotions were part of the decisions of the second plenary meeting of the Commission held in Wudil, Kano and presided over by the Commission’s Chairman, Alhaji Musiliu Smith, a retired Inspector General of Police,” the statement said.
It noted that the promotion and ratification of the exercise had been conveyed to the IG for implementation in a letter signed by the Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Commission, Musa Istifanus.
